The classic 3 card spread has so many different uses, as we have seen in the past post. This general 4 card spread can also be used for many purposes. Sometimes we need a bit more clarity. Think of the fourth card like a ribbon that ties everything together into something complete.
This spread is still simple and easy for anyone to do. The only difference is that it goes a bit deeper than the 3 card spread. It is perfect when you feel like you almost have the answer, but something is still missing.
When to Use a 4 Card Spread
We all have questions that leave us feeling stuck. Remember, you are not stuck. You just have not fully understood the answer yet, even though you can feel it. You simply need clarity, and that is where this spread comes in.
It is great when you are trying to make a choice between two different thoughts.
Sometimes we read tarot using a 3 card spread and it leaves us with more questions. This spread adds that additional information that is needed more often than not. It allows you to go just a bit deeper.
What about when you feel like you already have your answer, but you are still questioning if your interpretation is accurate? The additional card can bring confirmation and reassurance.
As humans, we are emotional beings. We feel deeply, some more than others. Emotions are not a bad thing. However, sometimes our emotions do not match the situation. This spread can bring peace of mind and heart by helping you understand what is truly happening and why you feel the way you do.
The Structure of the Spread
Card 1: The Situation at Hand
The first card touches on the root issue at hand. This is the matter that is calling you.
Sometimes it may not even be what you originally came to ask about. Spirit has a way of bringing the message that is most important to the surface. If something else needs your attention, it will show up here.
This is what you should be paying close attention to. It can be anything that needs reflection.
Card 2: The Challenge or Influence
This card brings more depth to the situation. It gives insight into the energy behind what is happening.
It shows what is causing the situation and what may have fueled it to begin with.
Card 3: Guidance for Your Next Step
This is where your spiritual guiding light team comes through with the message you need to hear.
It is up to you whether you take the advice, but it is in your best interest to reflect on it. This does not mean making decisions out of fear or panic. It means sitting with the guidance and understanding what is being shown to you.
Sometimes the message may hit deeply. You may feel emotional, and that is okay. That is usually a sign that something needs to be acknowledged and worked through.
Card 4: The Outcome or Final Clarity
This is the “ribbon” that ties everything together.
It answers lingering questions and can show the outcome based on your current path or depending on whether you follow the guidance given.
Your spiritual guiding light team is here to support you. They understand your energy and can often predict your next move based on your patterns and emotions.
This final card should leave you with a deeper understanding and a sense of confidence moving forward.
How to Read the Message as a Whole
Each card has its own meaning, but reading tarot as a whole story is just as important.
Do not only focus on each individual card. Look at the bigger picture. Let the cards tell you a story.
Your spiritual guiding light team is communicating with you, and sometimes we understand things better when we see the full story.
Pay attention to patterns. What shows up the most? Wands, cups, swords, or pentacles? Are there many reversed cards?
These details matter.
A Real Example of This Spread in Action

This is just an example. If you would like a reading for your personal situation, feel free to book with me.
This example is to show how I would interpret this spread.
Card 1: The Hermit Reversed
The Hermit represents a spiritual journey, often one of solitude and deep reflection. Upright, it shows wisdom gained through experience.
Reversed, this may point to immaturity, avoidance, or ignoring important guidance. You may be receiving advice that you are not fully taking in, which could be contributing to your current situation.
This is a sign to pause, reflect, and possibly seek guidance or do some shadow work before making your next move.
Card 2: Judgement
You are being called into a spiritual awakening.
There is something happening that your spiritual guiding light team wants you to recognize. It is time to wake up, rise, and move forward.
Something has reached its end, and it is time to transition into a new phase.
Card 3: Queen of Wands
Listening to your spiritual guidance will help you step into a more confident and powerful version of yourself.
This energy represents self assurance, confidence, creativity, and strong leadership. You are capable of channeling your energy into something meaningful and successful.
This is about trusting yourself and taking action with confidence.
Card 4: Page of Pentacles
By listening to your spiritual guiding light team, you open yourself up to new opportunities, especially in career or creative pursuits.
This card speaks of growth, learning, and new beginnings. You may benefit from seeking mentorship or guidance from someone more experienced.
Stay focused, avoid distractions, and remain open to learning. This will lead to success and steady progress.
Journal Prompts for Deeper Reflection
The example above is simply to help you understand how to use this spread. It is not a personal reading.
Here are a few prompts you can use after your own reading:
- What is this reading trying to show me about my current path
- What part of this message resonated with me the most and why
- What do I need to release in order to move forward with clarity
- What is the next aligned step I can take for myself
- How can I better support myself through this situation
Moving Forward With Clarity
As you can see, this spread adds much more detail than the classic 3 card spread. That one additional card can provide deeper insight and help you feel more complete in your understanding.
This spread is perfect for general questions when you need clarity, without going too far into the future. For more complex or specific situations, a larger spread may be more suitable.
If this spread resonates with you, I encourage you to try it for yourself.
If you do not read tarot, that is okay. I offer readings using this spread as well. When filling out your intake form, simply request the General 4 card spread and I will use it for your reading.
